The acid pickling of steel pipe blanks serves to remove iron oxide scale formed during pipe production and welding. Although some scale may flake off during shaping, the exposed steel base rapidly rusts when exposed to air and moisture. If these oxides remain unremoved before hot-dip galvanizing, they will impede the reaction between the steel substrate and molten zinc, resulting in incomplete zinc coating and black spots caused by missed coating areas.
