8. What is zinc chloride?

Zinc chloride (ZnCl₂) appears as white powder or granular crystals with a melting point of 283°C and a boiling point of 723°C. It readily absorbs moisture from the air and becomes hygroscopic. The compound is water-soluble and decomposes upon contact with water, forming white zinc hydroxide precipitate. Due to its ability to dissolve metal oxides at high temperatures, it serves as an effective solvent. In galvanizing processes, it is typically mixed with ammonium chloride.
