Zinc chloride (ZnCl₂) exists as a white powder or granular crystal with a melting point of 283°C and a boiling point of 723°C. It is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air and become damp. It is soluble in water, and when dissolved in water, it decomposes to produce a white precipitate of zinc hydroxide. Due to its ability to dissolve metal oxides at high temperatures, it is used as a solvent. In the hot-dip galvanizing process, it is typically used in mixture with ammonium chloride.
